Preventing A Breakdown Of Your A/C On Extremely Hot Days: What You Can Do

Those extremely warm temperatures throughout summer can be brutal, but they're even worse when you come home and find that the inside of your home is just as hot as the outside. A hot house is not a good sign. If your air conditioner is not working, it can cause a number of other problems around your home as well. Walls will begin to sweat, and mold and mildew can grow quickly. Not to mention the food in your home can quickly turn in extremely hot temperatures. To prevent a breakdown of your air conditioning system during these extreme temperatures, there are things you can do. Read on for a few of these things.

Don't Over-Adjust The Thermostat

It may sound like a good idea to crank the thermostat to keep cool, but it's actually going to be counter-productive. Over-adjusting the thermostat will only cause your system to work hard to keep up with the lower temperature setting and could cause a premature breakdown of the system altogether. If your home feels too warm, only adjust the temperature at most to four degrees. It may not sound like much, but it will make a difference in your home.

Keep The Shades Drawn

In order to help keep your home cool, use the shades and curtains in your home to help keep the sun out. The sun will add warmth, so keeping it out is going to make a big difference in temperature. If you don't have blinds or curtains, it's time to make the investment. They can also help keep drafts out and keep your home warmer in winter months. If you can't afford to add these to your home, use old sheets for the time being.

Spray Down Your Condensing Unit

If you haven't cleaned the condensing unit in awhile, it's time to roll your sleeves up and get to work. Take the exterior panels off of your unit and clean the fins inside using a garden hose. Don't use a powerful spray, as you can bend the fins. Instead, just give it a good cleaning to remove any debris that has built up. Repeat this on all four sides of your unit. Then open the lid to the unit and spray it from the inside out. Replace all of the panels and secure them in place.

Extremely hot days can take a lot out of you, but it can also take a lot out of your air conditioning unit. If you have a breakdown, call AC repair services right away to get your unit running again.

About Me

Keeping Kids Comfortable

I grew up in a small, rural town. The elementary school I attended contained less than two hundred students. And, this small school educated children from kindergarten to the seventh grade. The actual school building was extremely old and run down. Because I grew up in the southern United States, the spring and summer months were often extremely hot and humid. Unfortunately, the air conditioning system at my school was hopelessly inadequate. I remember sweating to the point of dehydration inside the classroom on a number of occasions. Whenever I was hot, I didn’t feel much like paying attention to my teachers. If you are the principle of a school, you should do everything in your power to keep your students cool and comfortable during the warm weather months. On this blog, you will discover the best HVAC systems to install in schools.
